Like you, I've come across many emergency vehicles with their sirens blaring. The law is that you pull your vehicle over to the side of the road making a clear passage for the firetruck, ambulance or police vehicle. Even when they are travelling south and you are travelling north you do this. All vehicles stopped give them a clear sight line as they speed along.
In our lives we encounter many emergencies. I think it behooves us to stop what we are doing so we can let the flurry pass. Being still when there is a lot of anxiety all around us helps us to see what is really occuring. Often it's just a lot of flashing lights.... sparking personalities perhaps ..that have been triggered.
I recently attended a workshop with the focus on learning to become a "non anxious presence". Become aware of your anxiety, own it as yours rather than being caused by someone else, and breathe. Then you can more easily step aside and let the storm, that is your reaction, blow through. You'll return to your calm more easily than making it all mean more than it is....another racing thought... you can pull over and stop.
